A diverse programme of educational events in Jerusalem, Ramallah, Bethehem and Nablus ensured that local children and young adults were given a real stake in the Festival. Involving over 130 local participants in total, these events were planned in collaboration with teaching staff at several music foundations (including the Kamandjâti Association, the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music, the Barenboim-Said Foundation and Nablus the Culture), and with several Palestinian schools.

The educational programme was designed to complement the excellent long-term teaching offered by these local partner organisations.

Highlights included:

-String workshops for instrumentals students led by members of the Choir of London Orchestra. Several advanced students went on to take part in the Festival gala concerts.

-Piano masterclasses with Saleem Abboud Ashkar in Ramallah and Jerusalem.

-Opera workshops in Jerusalem and Ramallah. These extended (four-hour) introductions to opera for schoolchildren were based around the production of the Magic Flute staged as part of the Festival.

-A chamber music session for clarinet students in Nablus.  Young performers from Nablus the Culture played for the first time as soloists in a chamber group, rehearsing excerpts from Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet with a string quartet from the Choir of London Orchestra.

-Two childrens’ art workshops, staged in conjunction with the al-Hoash Gallery in East Jerusalem, used the Magic Flute production to inspire painting and drawing.

These events were closely integrated with the Festival performance programme, and students were encouraged to attend events to further enrich their experience. Complimentary tickets for concerts and opera performances were allocated for all workshop participants.
